7 Eco-Challenge: There is a hippo in the bathtub

I have been turning a blind eye to the personal products we use. I guess I just didn't want to deal with knowing what is in them and trying to find affordable alternatives. But enough is enough...we are making improvements in other area's of our lives so it is time to start putting our soap, hair products etc under the microscope (not literally because I don't have one).

The Plan
Make an inventory of everything Joe, B and I use. Look each product up on the Cosmetics Safety Database to determine what is in them and how good/bad they are overall. I will also be looking for the Dirty Dozen chemicals in our current products.

We all that is done we will look for affordable alternatives to what we currently use.

Have you made changes in the products you use? What products did you swap out and what did you use instead?  Any products you love that you would totally recommend. Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. We did this over 2 years ago now, I think it was the first thing I did when we found out about the Cosmetic Database.

do you know what is in your cosmetics?

I am amazed at the change in both my husband and me - we both had very sensitive skin and many of our problems are long gone.

  2. Thanks for the link! I used to use vegan shampoo and conditioner and my hair was the best it has ever been. I am excited to see similar results again.

  3. So glad I found this blog--we're doing something similar over at my spot and it's a) a lot of fun and b) completely ridiculous when you really start to look around your house and see that basically it all wants to kill you. Can't wait to see what you dig up!

  5. Jen - I have actually already done this! I am swapped out all of my products. Check out my blog, the second and third posts for the products that I now use. I am hooked on Olivier soaps, Striped, Sweet LeiLani, and Honeybee Gardens makeup. Check it out!

  7. I just finished an article about green cleaning for my day job. One of the sources they offered was http://www.lesstoxicguide.ca. It's a fantastic site that offers you the best and best alternatives.
